What is Zcash?
Zcash is a digital currency that can hide the addresses and amounts in a payment, using zero-knowledge proofs that verify a transaction is valid without revealing its details.
Zcash was designed by a group of scientists who came together in 2013 and was released in October 2016 by Zooko Wilcox and the Electric Coin Company, formed in 2015. It was built by taking Bitcoin's open-source code and adding zero-knowledge proofs, so it carries the same 21 million supply cap and the same roughly four-year reward halving. The NU5 upgrade on May 31, 2022 brought in the Halo 2 proving system and removed the trusted setup ceremony the earlier shielded protocol had required.
