What is Avalanche?
Avalanche is a network of interconnected blockchains that run apps and smart contracts, and its AVAX token pays transaction fees and is staked to help validate the network.
Avalanche was built by Ava Labs, founded by researchers and engineers from Cornell University and led by CEO Emin Gün Sirer, and its mainnet opened in September 2020. Consensus works by repeatedly polling a small random sample of validators until the answer settles, with Snowman as the protocol for linear chains. The Primary Network runs three chains: the C-Chain for smart contracts, the P-Chain for validators and chain creation, and the X-Chain for asset trading. AVAX is capped at 720 million, 360 million of it minted at genesis, and transaction fees are burned.
