What is Ethereum?

ETH is the native currency of Ethereum, a blockchain that runs apps and contracts as open code, and it is used to pay the network's transaction fees.

Vitalik Buterin wrote the whitepaper and the first network went live on 30 July 2015. After the 2016 DAO attack a community vote hard-forked the chain and split it in two. A fee change in August 2021 began burning the base fee charged on every transaction, and on 15 September 2022 the Merge ended mining and moved consensus to proof of stake.
