What is Bittensor?
TAO is the token of Bittensor, an open network whose participants produce digital commodities such as compute and AI inference, and it is what the chain pays them in proportion to the value they contribute.
Bittensor was built by Jacob Steeves and Ala Shaabana, and its white paper was written under the pseudonym "Yuma Rao." The first miners and validators were switched on in January 2021, with no premine and no ICO. Supply is capped at 21 million TAO, the same figure as Bitcoin, but halvings are triggered when issuance crosses the midpoint of the remaining supply rather than at fixed block heights.
