What is XRP?
XRP is the native currency of the XRP Ledger, a blockchain for payments and asset exchange, spent as the transaction cost and destroyed in the process.
Jed McCaleb, Arthur Britto and David Schwartz built the XRP Ledger between 2011 and early 2012; McCaleb and Britto then founded Ripple — at the time OpenCoin — with Chris Larsen in September 2012. All 100 billion XRP were created at once at inception, and in 2017 Ripple locked 55 billion of its own holdings in escrow. Consensus is neither proof-of-work nor proof-of-stake: the ledger advances when the validators each participant has chosen to trust agree.
