What is Solana?
SOL is the native currency of Solana, a blockchain designed to process large volumes of transactions quickly, and it is used to pay fees and take part in securing the network.
Anatoly Yakovenko published the whitepaper in late 2017 and built Solana with engineers who had come from Qualcomm, Intel and Dropbox; mainnet beta opened in 2020. On top of proof of stake it adds Proof of History, which records the order of transactions and the time elapsed between them separately from consensus. Issuance began at 8% a year, falls by 15% each year and stops at 1.5%, and half of the base fee charged per signature is burned.
