What is Filecoin?
Filecoin is a peer-to-peer network for decentralized file storage, in which FIL pays storage providers and rewards them for keeping the data.
Protocol Labs built it and the mainnet opened on 15 October 2020. Storage providers must keep submitting proof of replication, showing they made a unique copy of a client's file, and proof of spacetime, showing they still hold it for the whole agreed term. The right to produce a block is drawn at random in proportion to the storage capacity a provider contributes to the network, and the supply is capped at 2 billion.
