What is Sui?
SUI is the native token of Sui, a layer-1 blockchain whose smart contracts are written in Move, and it pays transaction fees and is staked to help secure the network.
Mysten Labs, set up by Evan Cheng and four other co-founders, built Sui and opened mainnet in May 2023. Instead of writing balances into accounts, it stores everything as an object with its own ID, and a transaction that touches only objects held by a single owner is settled without going through consensus. Its contract language, Move, came out of the Diem (Libra) project at Facebook. Total supply is capped at 10 billion.
