What is Hyperliquid?
HYPE is the native token of Hyperliquid, a blockchain that runs its perpetual futures and spot order books fully onchain, and it is used to pay network gas fees and to stake to validators.
Hyperliquid Labs, led by Jeff and iliensinc, classmates from Harvard, is the core contributor, and its documentation states the team is self-funded and has taken no external capital. Consensus runs on HyperBFT, a custom algorithm inspired by HotStuff, and the HyperEVM was added in February 2025 to run Ethereum-style smart contracts on the same chain. HYPE was first distributed at the genesis event on 29 November 2024, with 23.8% set aside for core contributors.
