What is Bitcoin?
Bitcoin is a digital currency for sending payments directly between people without a bank or other middleman, with the total supply fixed at 21 million coins.
The whitepaper "Bitcoin: A Peer-to-Peer Electronic Cash System" was published in 2008 under the pseudonym Satoshi Nakamoto, and the network started the following year. Satoshi left the project in late 2010 without revealing much about himself. Consensus runs on SHA-256 proof of work, supply is capped at 21 million coins, and new issuance halves every 210,000 blocks — roughly every four years.
