What is Polkadot?
Polkadot is a network built to connect separate blockchains so they can move assets and data between them, and DOT is used for governance votes, staking, and buying the computing time chains run on.
Gavin Wood, a co-founder of Ethereum, designed it, development started in 2016, and the Web3 Foundation opened the mainnet on 26 May 2020. One relay chain provides security while the chains connected to it process transactions in parallel, and consensus runs on a proof of stake in which DOT holders nominate validators. A governance vote fixed the maximum supply at 2.1 billion DOT, and starting with the first step on 14 March 2026 issuance falls by 13.14% of the remaining gap every two years.
