What is NEAR Protocol?
NEAR Protocol is a blockchain that splits its network into parallel pieces to handle more traffic, and NEAR is its native token, used to pay transaction fees and to stake to secure the network.
NEAR was started in 2018 by Illia Polosukhin and Alexander Skidanov, and its mainnet opened in April 2020. Polosukhin co-authored "Attention Is All You Need," the paper written at Google that introduced the Transformer architecture. Validators receive newly issued NEAR at an annualized target of 2.5% of total supply, and transaction fees are burned apart from the 30% rebated to contracts.
